Shipping Box Sizes: A Practical Selection Guide
The best shipping box is large enough for protection and small enough to avoid paying to move empty space.
Start from the product, not a stock-box list
Build the required inside size from the product and protective system. Then compare that target with stocked cartons, considering which product orientation is safe and efficient.

Minimum inside dimension = Product dimension + 2 × Padding per side
Translate inside size to shipping size
Carriers and pallet plans generally need finished external dimensions. Board thickness, flaps, seams, bulging, and overpacking can make the sealed package larger than its listed inside dimensions.
A five-point selection check
- •Does the product fit with the required protection?
- •Can the packer assemble and close it consistently?
- •What are the finished external dimensions and DIM weight?
- •Does the box make an efficient pallet layer?
- •Can fewer stock sizes cover the order mix without excessive void fill?
