Standard Pallet Sizes and Dimensions Guide
The 48 × 40 inch footprint is common in U.S. distribution, but it is not the only pallet size worth planning for.
Common pallet footprints

Footprint is only the start
A pallet plan also needs pallet height, case orientation, maximum loaded height, total weight, deck coverage, and any allowed overhang. Nominal dimensions are planning inputs, not a guarantee that a pallet is suitable for a particular rack or carrier.
Calculate a complete load

Cases per pallet = Cases per layer (TI) × Complete layers (HI)
- •Test both carton orientations on the deck.
- •Subtract pallet height from the maximum loaded height.
- •Use complete layers unless the operation accepts partial layers.
- •Check weight and stability after the geometric fit.
